Geographical Indications Network

The European Union protects the names of certain products in order to promote their unique characteristics related to their geographical origin or traditional techniques and practices. A "geographical indication" (GI) may be granted for product names if they have a specific link with the place where they are manufactured. GI recognition enables consumers to have confidence and to distinguish quality products,

while helping manufacturers to better promote their products. Recognized as intellectual property, geographical indications are playing an increasingly important role in trade negotiations between the EU and other countries . Geographical indications establish intellectual property rights for certain products whose qualities are closely linked to the production area. Geographical indications may be: PDO - protected designation of origin (for food and wine), PGI - protected geographical indication (for food and wine), IG - geographical indication (for alcoholic beverages and aromatised wines).
